It is a well known fact that using the keyboard is faster than using the mouse. That is why experienced users, instead of going through a series of clicks, use hotkeys to be more productive. ActiveWords takes this “be more productive” approach one step further and allows you to do a variety of tasks just by typing in the assigned active word. Type in "Firefox" for example and you will be able to launch the Firefox browser; type in "CNN" and you will be directed to the CNN website.

Download an executable, run it, and a setup wizard will show up and help you quickly install ActiveWords on your PC. When you’re done with the installation and you launch ActiveWords, you will be presented with a Reminder prompt that invites you to get started with the free ActiveWords version (30 free active words, no add in content), try the ActiveWords PLUS version for free for 60 days (add unlimited active words, insert free content), or purchase a license for ActiveWords PLUS. After that you will be presented with the ActiveWords Help file that contains useful information on how to use the application.

While ActiveWords is running, you will see an icon in the system tray and a floating icon on your desktop, icon that you can place anywhere you want. Click any of these icons and you will be presented with your list of active words (there are several entries included by default, just to help you get started). Right click any of these icons and you will be presented with a context menu that, among other things, allows you to access the ActiveWords Options. From the Options menu you can change the key that triggers all active words, you can choose if you want ActiveWords to run at startup, you can enable the ActionPad, and more.

Using ActiveWords is a very simple matter. Say you want to launch the CNN webpage. Type in the active word “cnn”, hit F8 (the default trigger key), and your default browser will launch and take you to the CNN webpage. Accessing websites is one thing you can do with ActiveWords – the Add Wizard will help you set up active words for the following actions: substitute text, substitute rich text, substitute HTML, launch a program, open a document, navigate to an internet site, send an email, open a folder, scripting.

You can set up active words for a variety of actions and then use said active words to do things more efficiently, thus boosting your productivity. Speaking about that, ActiveWords features a Productivity Center that provides useful info on how the application helps you save time and money.

With a few keystrokes you can launch your favorite applications, your most visited websites, and the folders you need the most. ActiveWords is sure to help you be more productive.

Pros

Installing ActiveWords on a Windows-powered machine is a simple task. Useful help documentation is presented to you. Easily set up active words for any action you want. Very easily launch applications, open websites, and so on, using the assigned active words. There are two ActiveWords editions to choose from.

Cons

The free version is limited to 30 active words.
